Nancy lson, Truth

In an earlier blog we spoke about Nancy Olson’s TRUTH out of RUFFLED STRAWBERRY PARFAIT. Mike Olson has added his thoughts. “One thing I like most about TRUTH is that the teeth are obvious and somewhat plentiful, but she doesn’t overdo it.  Many, many big edges (toothy and not) are getting too big and too frilly for my taste.  A wide yellow edge, is becoming after all, just an uglier yellow flower.  Same with wide picotees and large eyes, some are just painting over the petal self color to the eye/picotee color and losing the complementary tones and style and elegance.  I also love the occasional hiccup or variation in the edge – the pic you posted shows a hooked talon, and the other pic shows a large sharp edge protrusion that really isn’t a “white sharks tooth”. Thanks Mike for your input.

PLEATS FOR LAURA, Fran Harding , Daylily teeth blog

PLEATS FOR LAURA

FORESTLAKE BECKY was registered in 2003 by Fran Harding.  It is the parent of Mike Grossman’s MARMALADE MUNCHER and also the parent of Fran’s fine daylily, PLEATS FOR LAURA.  Don’t get too excited about obtaining PLEATS FOR LAURA.. Fran has indicated that she is not ready to release it. Darn!   PLEATS FOR LAURA is one of the finest examples that I’ve seen as an improved FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN. The deep ruffling extends from the throat onto the petals. The petals show more hooks than teeth on the edge.  Saw tooth sepals complement the daylily. I’m glad I did get Mike Grossman’s MARMALADE MUNCHER as it also has saw tooth sepals. For now enjoy the picture of PLEATS FOR LAURA. I have! Thanks to Fran for sharing the image!  …More tomorrow on the daylily teeth blog…

ART IN HEAVEN ART IN HEAVEN, Luddy Lambertson, Daylily teeth blog
ART IN HEAVEN , Luddy Lambertson

Francois V from Belgium is looking for daylilies that lean toward the blue color with an edge and visible teeth.

There are several daylilies that I can think of that may assist Francois.  The first one is David Kirchoff’s GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. It has been a proven parent for edges for several hybridizers. Luddy Lambertson is introducing in the Spring 2011 several daylilies out of GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. There are other choices from Lambertson garden. Several of LUDDY’S go back to Tetra Spindazzle. One daylily of particular interest to me is the 2009 introduction, ART IN HEAVEN. This daylily was seen in a display garden during the Region 2 Summer meeting. The performance was noted as a must have by Nikki Schmith. I am always on the lookout for Luddy’s daylilies that are hardy so it appears that this one will work in our Zone 5 climate.  Anyways Luddy is good source for persons working with teeth and blue daylilies.

A word of caution, be aware that when you purchase daylilies from warmer climates zones than your own, the performance may be impaired. Visa versa, when you buy daylilies from a colder climate than you own, the performance may be negatively affected.  As hybridizers, many of us take these risks to advance our own programs….  More tomorrow on the Daylily Blog….

John Kinnebrew , 2011 Introduction

randy stephens x iwanna pir John Kinnebrew , 2011 Introduction
John Kinnebrew Introduction 2011

John Kinnebrew is introducing an important toothy daylily in the Spring 2011.  The cross is (Randy Stephens x Iwanna Piranha). These two daylilies are sibs so you get double doses of((Forestlake Ragamuffin X Mort Morss) Cosmic Sensation). By being  loaded with teeth genetics, you should easily be able to cross this daylily into Purples, Oranges, Reds, and of course daylilies with green edges!  Looking at the daylily you can see that the watermark extends the surface of the outer petals. And some of the teeth are actually bi-colored, red and gold.

John’s website isn’t up yet so if you want this daylily you should probably advance order it. Let John know you saw the daylily on my blog so he knows why you are calling. I had told him I would show it. Thanks to Michael Miller for sending over the image… More tomorrow on the daylily teeth blog..

FORESTLAKE TIGERLING CLAWS , Fran Harding, Daylily Teeth Blog

FL.TigerlingClaws FORESTLAKE TIGERLING CLAWS , Fran Harding, Daylily Teeth Blog
Forestlake Tigerling Claws, Fran Harding

Yuma has been involved again in another important Fran Harding registration. Fran registered FORESTLAKE TIGERLING CLAWS in 2003. The cross is [(Forestlake Lacy Bloomers X (sdlg. x Forestlake Fringe Binge)]. The cross of FORESTLAKE LACY BLOOMERS is [(sdlg x Yuma)(sdlg x Forestlake Fringe Binge).

An interesting trait of FORESTLAKE TIGERLING CLAWS is the white fringe tips on the heavily ruffled petal edges. It’s probably a rare trait in this color combination. On occasion BASS GIBSON does shows cream tips on the edge. Maybe someday someone will bloom the cross of the two… And get large white teeth on an orange daylily…Now that would be cool!

Thank you Fran for the image… more tomorrow..

OUTER LIMITS, Jamie Gossard, Daylily Teeth Blog

OUTER LIMITS, Jamie Gossard

Welcome back.  Hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday. I spent last week in Florida visiting friends and family .Something different, something fun, I caught several nice sized Bass while canal fishing with my father-in-law. The biggest fish broke the line (darn!), but we did land a five and a couple of four pounders.

A relatively new daylily on the market that I believe will assist in producing green teeth is Jamie Gossard’s OUTER LIMITS. The cross is (SABRE TOOTH TIGER x REAP THE WHIRLWIND). This breaks down to two doses of FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN by two doses of TETRA SPINDAZZLE.  Jamie states in his description that the edge has a “greenish cast”.  Looking at the daylily, you can see the edge is an extension of the green throat.  While this daylily obviously favors a narrow cross, don’t overlook a round daylily with BEST EDGE in the genetics.  More tomorrow on the daylily teeth blog…

For those of you who are interested, this is a picture of my father-in-law holding a Bass which we caught last week in Florida. He is 86 years young and still gets out almost everyday and goes fishing.  Good Times!

PAULA NETTLES, JOHN KINNEBREW, Daylily teeth blog

PaulaNettles PAULA NETTLES, JOHN KINNEBREW, Daylily teeth blog
Paula Nettles, John Kinnbrew

I recently spoke to John Kinnebrew Jr. about next year’s 2011 releases. He said he will have several teeth introductions for next year. He has a really nice introduction coming out of Randy Stephens.

The Kinnebrew’s have been using FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN in their crosses since the early 2000’s. One introduction of particular interest is PAULA NETTLES. Most people know that I like teeth on the sepals and John Jr.  says this about P.N. “ for  breeders, this one has some teeth starting on the sepals as well.” The cross is also very appealing. (Spacecoast Passion Released x Forestlake Ragamuffin). We all know RAGAMUFFIN by now. It is the S.C. Passion Released that I find intriguing in the cross. The cross of S.C. PASSION RELEASED is (Spacecoast Starburst x Childhood Treasure.)  Why do I find it intriguing?  Here is something not many people know. It has been suggested that SPACECOAST STARBURST is one of the parents to Matthew Kaskel’s  BEST EDGE.  We all know by now that BEST EDGE and introductions out of BEST EDGE have a tendency to bred green edges. So one could surmise that SPACCOAST STARBURST is possibly responsible for the green in BEST EDGE.

Back to the cross of PAULA NETTLES, if the above is indeed a fact, you have a decent probability of pulling out a recessive green teeth when crossed to green edge. John has PAULA NETTLES for available for $75.00…

I am going to be off until next Thursday, I have family business to take care of. We will start back up Dec 9.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone…Thanks for reading the daylily blog.

IRISH HALO green edge, Bill Waldrop , Daylily Teeth Blog

PRINCESS DIANA x SMALL WORLD GONE FISHIN IRISH HALO green edge, Bill Waldrop , Daylily Teeth Blog
PRINCESS DIANA x SMALL WORLD GONE FISHIN Michael Miller

A  daylily that arrived on the scene in 2010 with a green edge was Bill Waldrop’s  IRISH HALO. The cross is (Leslie Renee x Angels Gather Around)(Leslie Renee x Angels Gather Around). A past memory was in Stamile’s garden with Steve Moldovan.  Pat proudly showed us a fresh seedling bloom from his refrigerator saying “ look at the daylily with the green edge”. The seedling later become LESLIE RENEE. When Pat introduced LESLIE RENEE he proclaimed it as the first flowers that could be called green in edge. Another noteworthy tidbit of information is that RED FANG is in LESLIE RENEE. The cross is (seedling x Red Fang) Northern Glitter). Remember that Pat said the edge in RED FANG is often expressed with teeth. And that Pat also said RED FANG represents the future of reds.

A recent memory was when Bill Chambers and I visited Bill Waldrop and his wife, Diana, this past spring. Bill W.  proudly showed us IRISH HALO.   We stood in front of the daylily and discussed its merits. Bill didn’t have to convince me it was an outstanding daylily as I knew the pedigree and could visibly see the plant habit. Thankfully, Bill had a piece to spare for me to take home and I was able to use it this year in hybridizing.

I like IRISH HALO over LESLIE RENEE as daylily to use in green teeth hybridizing because of the scape height and double doses of LESLIE RENEE.  LESLIE RENEE is registered at 24 inches in scape height, IRISH HALO boasts of a 30 inch scape.  Another reason is that Larry Grace’s   ANGEL’S GATHER AROUND is the other parent. That cross is (Mandalay Bay Music x J.T. Davis).  J.T. DAVIS,  2010 Stout Silver Medal winner, has been known to produce green edges.

If you want IRISH HALO, Bill’s supply has been limited. But it is a fast increase so call him to inquire.  LESLIE RENEE is being sold on the Lily Auction for under $25.00. It is certainly worth buying to use for teeth crosses for the budget minded purchaser.

Thanks to Michael Miller for the image of his seedling that he is going to use for with his green teeth crosses. Tomorrow on the daylily blog, another daylily to consider using in green teeth crosses.

GREEN TEETH, Daylily Blog by Mike Holmes

greenteeth GREEN TEETH, Daylily Blog by Mike Holmes
GREEN TEETH DAYLILY

Why do we want to breed green teeth? The image tells the story. Plus there aren’t any true green teeth daylilies available.  This hybridizing quest should be easier to do than the true blue daylily. We have pretty good tools to work with.

Around 2005,   Larry Grace became intrigued with the idea of hybridizing daylilies with green edges. One problem, where do you begin? The seedling Best Edge had been thought of as a daylily that could breed green edges. Larry  felt his own JT DAVIS would lead him toward green.  After years of work and careful selection,  he introduced  FULL OF TREASURE for 2011. FULL OF TREASURE, while it does not have a foliage green  edge, it does have a yellow to green edge. Best of all, the surface colors are on a neutral base with no visible tan tones in it. That makes FULL OF TREASURE a color cleaner. So do you want to bred green teeth, consider this daylily.  Tomorrow on the daylily blog we will talk about a few more “daylily green” edges to work  in crossing into teeth….btw-daylily image is a cheesy photoshop image…

Warm and Fuzzy seedling, David Mussar

ForestlakePointLacexForestlakeWarmAndFuzzyxsib b2 Warm and Fuzzy seedling, David Mussar

Forestlake Point Lace x Forestlake Warm And Fuzzy x sib-b

Dave Mussar recently wrote me about seed that he bloomed from FORESTLAKE WARM AND FUZZY.

“Hi Mike,

Here is a seedling that is a kid, actually a grandkid out of F. Warm & Fuzzy. The cross is actually Forestlake Point Lace x (FW&F x sib).  Seed came from Fran Harding. Both images are the same plant.   Image one was first bloom and it was shaded by other plants.  When I moved it to a sunnier location it developed more color.  It is a short plant (I think FW&F is only about 18″ tall too) and this one has a low bud count maybe in the range of 8 – 10.  I haven’t used it as much as I probably should have.  It gives a huge wide ruffle along with some teeth.

I noticed I might still have a few seeds from 2009 of it with Lemon Fringed Pastel as the pollen parent. I might have to start them next spring. Dave Mussar, Puslinch, Ontario”

Dave that’s quite a difference in coloration. I wonder if the difference in color is the same as the difference we see in patterns due to temperature. Oh, if you don’t plant the seeds, send them my way and I’ll grow out. I’t be interesting to make a F2 cross with the seedlings , you might get an extreme version of WARM AND FUZZY. Thanks for sharing your daylily. I’ll get back with everyone Monday morn on the daylily blog. Green Teeth next week! ….
