Southern black eyed daylily seedling

I liked the black eye color combination of this daylily seedling. This may be one of the blackest eyes that I have ever seen. The razor thin edge could be taken into a teeth cross to produce black teeth in the kids of this daylily.

I like the chartreuse edge on this daylily seedling . The color was decent. The daylily water spotted  due to the bud cracked open at the tips and water getting in before the daylily actually opened up.

It would be interesting to cross teeth into this southern daylily seedling out of Stamile’s Blue Lake to get patterned blue teeth.

Purple Daylily White Teeth Seedling

The reason I visit multiple hybridizer’s daylily gardens every year is to see what daylilies are on the horizon. Over the next Holiday week , I’m going to be showing seedlings from their gardens. Sorry I can’t tell you who they belong to. You’ll have to visit gardens to do your own exploring! I love the white teeth set off by the purple color on this daylily seedling.

Happy Holidays to all!

ALAN LANE AGIN-RED FRIDAY,daylily teeth blog

Here is a cross someone on a limited budget can make to get a tested high quality cross. Three   years ago I spoke to Linda Agin about her upcoming 2008 releases  of ALAN LANE AGIN http://agin.homestead.com/ALAN_LANE_AGIN.JPG and its sib, RED FRIDAY http://agin.homestead.com/files/maincover.jpg .  The cross was (Startle x Fortunes Dearest ). FORTUNES DEAREST http://bluegrassdaylilygardens.com/assets/daylilies-400-fall05/Fortunes_Dearest.jpg  can be purchased for $12.00 at Blue Grass Daylily Gardens for $12.00. You can find STARTLE for $10.00. If you live in the North, FORTUNES DEAREST is tender and may not bloom or even survive so get it in the spring and make your crosses with the northern hardy STARTLE.

Of Linda’s two introductions from  (Startle x Fortunes Dearest ), she recommended I get RED FRIDAY because it was her best parent for teeth. That said, I’ve also seen nice kids from its sib ALAN LANE AGIN  at Larry Grace’s and Jamie Gossard’s this past summer. Both of these guys had clear light purple daylilies with white teeth out of the daylily.  ALAN LANE AGIN proved to be tender for me and did not survive outdoors.  RED FRIDAY is hardy and vigorous. More coming on Startle on the daylily teeth blog… Thank you John Kulpa  for image of your DEVIL’S MISTRESS seedling.

FORESTLAKE DEVIL’S MISTRESS, Fran Harding

Fran Harding acquired STARTLE from John Benz in a trade that sent FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN his way. Fran registered FORESTLAKE DEVIL’S MISTRESS (Sdlg x Startle) in 1998. FORESTLAKE DEVIL’S MISTRESS has been a parent for seed sales for Fran. I don’t know how productive of a parent it has been because there haven’t been any  daylilies  registered as kids out of it.  A  batch of Fran’s advertised seeds that she had for sale  included a cross of FORESTLAKE DEVIL’S MISTRESS x WILD IRISH.   Michigan hybridizer and daylily teeth expert, John Kulpa has shown a promising daylily seedling from that cross that closely resembles its parent FORESTLAKE DEVIL’S MISTRESS. STARTLE and Kids, Daylily Teeth Blog Mike Holmes

Startling Creation STARTLE and Kids, Daylily Teeth Blog Mike Holmes
STARTLING CREATION (Startle x Tetra Spindazzle)

Pat Stamile took STARTLE into his line and introduced DEBUSSY (Magic Amethyst x Startle) in 1999. Arguably this could be an origin of the edge in Stamile breeding. The different between Gossard and Stamile hybridizing is that Stamile went round, selected clean color and early on may have sacrificed heavy edge.  Gossard wanted narrow form with heavy teeth and color was a secondary consideration. Several notables of Stamile’s with STARTLE in the background are LARRY MILLER, THE TERMINATOR, VIOLET BECOME YOU, and BELLA NOTE. I’ve mentioned before that I thought VIOLET BECOMES YOU http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/2008/02/04/Calif_Sue/5e77df.jpg could be an important parent for teeth hybridizing because of its genetics and I like the scape. Certainly you could take it into a Gossard such a VENUS FLY TRAP  http://www.daylilynet.com/336658330.jpg  which has HEAVENLY BEGINNINGS in it and get nice purples with decent edges. Gossard’s FORBIDDEN TERRITORY (White Fang X Heavenly Pink Fang) http://www.daylilynet.com/22a78a640.jpg  is another candidate that would be a good cross with VIOLET BECOMES YOU.  Since John Benz has several round daylilies from STARTLE breeding, his daylilies would also match up well with Stamiles round STARTLE line… Picture of STARTLING CREATION is the sib to HEAVENLY BEGINNINGS… More tomorrow on the Daylily Teeth Blog…

Heavenly Beginnings, Jamie Gossard ,Daylily Teeth Blog

Heavenly Beginnings Heavenly Beginnings, Jamie Gossard ,Daylily Teeth Blog
Heavenly Beginnings, Jamie Gossard

When Jamie Gossard saw a few STARTLE seedlings at John Benz’s that later became WHITE FANG and SHIRLEY FARMER, Jamie thought why not take STARTLE into a narrow form. After all John preferred rounder daylilies so his competition in this area would be limited and he would have a unique look.  So Jamie acquired STARTLE from John.

Jamie’s breakthrough cross and introduction was HEAVENLY BEGINNINGS (Startle x Tetra Spindazzle). When the daylily bloomed back in the later 1990’s, Jamie had brought a bloom in a small cooler to Shirley Farmer’s summer picnic to show everyone. Shirley was already a daylily teeth lover so she was amazed at the size of the teeth. I was new to daylilies and really didn’t know what to think other than it looked like an exotic strange daylily. Our mentor had been Steve Moldovan who was a color nut and this daylily had awful color.  So I guess I had mixed feelings. My wife Sandy was unmoved. She liked color first. Jamie was undeterred with HEAVENLY BEGINNINGS color as he loved the newly found toothy edge on a large daylily. True to its name, HEAVENLY BEGINNINGS was a new beginning for Jamie as it became a cornerstone in his teeth daylilies program.

I’ll be off tomorrow for family, back Friday on the daylily teeth blog. B.T.W. John Kinnebrew sent over a note, his 2011 introductions are now online at http://www.spacecoastdaylilies.com/ …

STARTLE, Gene Beldon, Daylily Teeth Blog

Startle was hybridized by Gene Beldon and registered in 1988. It was a cross of (Broadmore Red x My Sunshine). MY SUNSHINE, a poly chrome of Reckamp’s provided the edge.A visual image of MY SUNSHINE is at http://www.montaukavalon.com/images/MySunshine.jpg . BROADMORE RED, also a Beldon introduction gave color. A visual image 0f BROADMORE RED is at http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/2008/07/24/Hemental/7dd4ec.jpg.   Notice the light edge on the daylily. Remember that we discussed previously that a daylily with a light colored edge, crossed with an edged daylily, you can get an edge. That’s what Beldon did. Now look at the image of Startle http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/2008/07/29/Hemental/ab3024.jpg  The edge shows itself. This is where the story of STARTLE begins; in John Benz’s garden. Image is of John’s BRAIDED LIGHTNING, (Red Lightning x Startle). More tomorrow on the Daylily Teeth Blog…

Bonibrae Sharky

Over the past several months we’ve primarily talked about Tetra Spindazzle and its offspring and Forestlake Ragamuffin and its offspring.  It is clear that Dan Trimmer with Tetra Spindazzle and Fran Harding with Forestlake Ragamuffin, they provided two of the most valuable daylilies available for the contemporary hybridizers of today. With Dan Trimmer’s conversion of TETRA SPINDAZZLE, it was a much luck as it was hybridizing genius and generosity from Dan that let other hybridizers such as  Jamie Gossard and John Benz  to unravel its potential. Many hybridizers  have shared in the successes FORESTLAKE REAGAMUFFIN as a parent. We can thank Fran for releasing the daylily so hybridizers can  advance the daylilies potential. Who would have thought Ragamuffin could produce such a beautiful double daylily such as Barry Mathie’s BONIBRAE SHARKY (Forestlake Ragamuffin x Licorice Candy). Over the next several daylily teeth blogs, I’d like to talk about another important daylily in edged hybridizing, Gene Beldon’s, STARTLE…

Forestlake Briar Patch, Fran Harding, Daylily Teeth Blog

FORESTLAKE BRIAR PATCH, Fran Harding

Fran Harding registered FORESTLAKE BRIAR PATCH in 2008. It is a cross of (Forestlake Lacy Bloomers x Forestlake Ragamuffin) To be honest with everyone, I was unaware that there was another BRIAR PATCH daylily in registration.  The B.P. that I knew was Larry Grace’s 2009 BRIAR PATCH (Larry’s Obsession x Vitner’s Treasure).  Other than sharing a name, the two daylilies come from different backgrounds.

For those of you who don’t know, Fran has registered 60 plus daylilies. Many of them are unavailable because Fran used these daylilies as parents in her daylily seed business. So when you do a search for specific daylilies of hers and can’t find a source to buy them, the reason may be is that they weren’t released to the public. I believe that I’ve said this before; Rich Howard carries several of Fran’s released daylilies. More tomorrow on the daylily garden blog…
