SHABBY CHIC

This is a seedling that was hybridized by my good friend Shirley Farmer. I call it SHIRLEY’S GREEN TEETH. When Shirley’s daughter turned over her garden to our care, this was one of the daylilies that I selected. The cross is (Leonidas x Creepy Crawler) (Seedling). LEONIDAS is a Harris-Benz hybrid with a cross of   (Yuma x Olin Criswell). Leonidas is an oldie that I really like. It is a yellow self and shows an early example of small teeth and hooks. Remember YUMA  is also a parent of FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN. CREEPY CRAWLER is a Hite hybrid,  (Mary Todd x Golden Surrey). And lets not forget that CREEPY CRAWLER worked its way into Fran Harding’s Forestlake line also going to 3’rd generation to FORESTLAKE POINT LACE. The seedling in Shirley’s cross is unknown to me. If I had to guess the cross, it is Shirley’s 2010 introduction, SHABBY  CHIC.  SHABBY CHIC is ((Forestlake Ragamuffin sib x Enchanted April) (Angels Smile X Ida’s Magic) Forestlake Ragamuffin). Studying the seedling in GREEN TEETH, I can see the high probability of ANGEL’S SMILE in it.

When John Benz saw SHIRLEY’S GREEN TEETH he immediately asked me for it. I told John that it had a short scape. John said he didn’t care because he knew the genetics in it were powerful for teeth and he said he thought it would breed green teeth. John for several years previous had been working on green teeth so this daylily was a fit in his program. So John took home a piece in 2009. We should see the results in 2011.

Next week we will be talking about Green Teeth Daylily Hybridizing. Tomorrow a follow up on FORESTLAKE  WARM AND FUZZY on the daylily blog.

WOD1 WORTHY OF DISTINCTION, Daylily Teeth Blog

WORTHY OF DISTINCTION

Following up with yesterdays discussion, pictured is ANGELO’S  registration WORTHY OF DISTINCTION.  Here is what Angelo says, ” Mike,  here is a picture of WOD taken in my yard.  It is a cross out of Forestlake Ragamuffin and a seedling  that also has F.L. Ragamuffin in the background. WOD is  a hard dormant with a high bud count 30-40. WOD is very toothy on the sepals and petals.   WOD passes on the toothy traits to many of it kids.  I want to thank Dan Trimmer for putting WOD in his catalog for me and making it available to the hybridizer’s community.  I am anxious to see what the hybridizer’s can create with it….. Angelo”… Angelo, I had a chance to discuss WOD with Dan Trimmer a year ago. Dan said he was proud to grow WOD and had bloomed keepers out of it. Thanks for sharing your comments….I think you got John Benz’s attention! More teeth tomorrow on the Daylily Blog..

WORTHY OF DISTINCTION, F2 ORANGE THROAT TEETH

Worthy Of Distinction F2 WORTHY OF DISTINCTION, F2 ORANGE THROAT TEETH
WORTHY OF DISTINCTION F2

My friend over in Pittsburg, Jim Bob Bobrzynski sent me this image of a F2 cross of Angelo Brunetti’s WORTHY OF DISTINCTION. The orange throat and orange teeth on a hot pink self work well together. The seedling resembles Jamie Gossard’s PUFFER FISH(Enchanted April x Forestlake Ragamuffin) except for the teeth on Angelo’s seedling are more pronounced.  If I didn’t mind about a scape under 28 inches, I’d take PUFFERFISH or Angelo’s seedling if I had it, into John Peat’s ANITA MCMASTER. This daylily is a lavender-pink with a tangerine orange watermark and heavy matching tangerine-orange edge. It has  four doses of SULTRY SMILE in it and a dose  ETERNITY’S SHADOW. ETERNITY’S SHADOW is loaded with dormancy in its genetics, tracing all the way back to Reckamp’s  SUMMER SPLENDOR. These orange throats and orange edge crosses are attractive and should be considered when you may think green throats are the only way to go…More teeth tomorrow on the Daylily teeth Blog…

WARM AND FUZZY, DAYLILY TEETH BLOGGER

FL Warm and Fuzzy WARM AND FUZZY, DAYLILY TEETH BLOGGER
FORESTLAKE WARM AND FUZZY, Fran Harding

Several weeks ago Michael Miller called me on the phone and said ”Mike you have to get Fran Harding’s, FORESTLAKE WARM AND FUZZY(Forestlake Lacy Bloomers × Forestlake Ragamuffin). I was in Fran Harding’s garden several years ago and some of the best seedlings seedling in her garden were out of FORESTLAKE WARM AND FUZZY.  The daylily seedlings had fuzzy hair all over them!”   Michael then made a post to the Daylily Robins looking for several of Fran’s daylilies. He was able to find a few Forestlake introductions from Rich Howard. Michael said he had Rich mail the newly acquired daylilies to Jamie Gossard for his immediate next bloom use.  But to Michael’s disappointment, he never found FORESTLAKE WARM AND FUZZY..… Michael said the daylily was registered but he was not sure it was ever introduced…Photo from Fran Harding.  More teeth tomorrow on the Daylily Blog…

Forestlake Ragamuffin Part 13, Carroll Quarry

FLRagamuffinXRuth Gordon1 Forestlake Ragamuffin Part 13, Carroll Quarry
Carroll Quarry seedling

I‘ve had my eye on this seedling of Carroll Quarry’s for a year now.  The seedling reminds me of MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR.   The cross is (Forestlake Ragamuffin x Ruth Gordon). RUTH GORDON was hybridized by Luddy Lambertson.  I recently asked Carroll about his seedling. Carroll said this, “ …… last year was its first year to bloom and I tried very hard to see if it is pod fertile, it would not set a pod and this was disappointing, this year its second year to bloom it set a pod every time I put pollen on the pistil, the scape is 26 inches and blooms up out of the foliage, nicely.  The flowers have always been consistent, first bloom and last bloom are the same at 5 inches, the edge is pretty heavy yet it opens with no problem and is always fully open at daylight”  ….Thanks Carroll… Tomorrow on the Daylily Blog another seedling….

Forestlake Ragamuffin, Part 12, MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR

malcolm david brooker Forestlake Ragamuffin, Part 12, MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR
MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR

Gerda Brooker introduced MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR  in 2007. Her late husband Malcolm hybridized the daylily. The cross is (FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN x T.HL 16).  T.H.L. 16 is a seedling that Malcolm acquired from Larry Grace. The seedling is a cross of (Tetra Helena Louisa x Larry Grace).

I’ve seen  MALCOLM BROOKER SENIOR  grown in several gardens from Alabama to Kentucky to our Ohio garden. In each garden, the daylily is special. It consistently displays a toothy edge on both the petals and sepals. The daylily is sunfast and looks grand in a clump. I’ve seen several seedlings out of MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR that have been outstanding. The teeth on the sepals  is passed onto the children. The children have a clear color with smooth substance. If you use MALCOLM DAVID BROOKER SENIOR , it should work with any color. One more thing,  M.D.B.S.  is registered at 6 inches but Gerda says it is 6.5 to 7 inches on her website. That makes M.D.B.S.  one of the largest round toothy daylilies you can use in your own hybridizing… . I’ll catch up with everyone Monday morning on the next Daylily Teeth Blog….

Recommendation from Jack Looye, ODE TO FAITH

odetofaithxAM Recommendation from Jack Looye, ODE TO FAITH
Jack Looye teeth seedling

Jack Looye wrote “Hi Mike, 2 years ago Bryan Culver gave me a plant of Ode to Faith, Klehm 03, it has lots of teeth, I crossed American Freedom on to it and only got 1 seed from this cross, it bloomed this last summer and I loved this seedling. It had 6 Fans and it was around 30″ tall. The daylily bloomed as a 1 year old from seed… Anyway I think Ode to Faith should be explored more, after seeing this seedling bloom I put a lot of crosses on this plant this last summer.”

Jack I agree, I like ODE TO FAITH. The daylily is registered at 33 inch height, Dor., 6 inch bloom. It is a yellow to gold blend. American freedom was registered by Frank Smith. The cross is ( Tet. Ultimate Perfection X J.T. Davis)  It is interesting that you got a rose color out of the cross. I would have not expected that. Anyways , nice seedling!

Thanks Jack for sharing your daylily cross. If anyone is interested, I saw Betty Fritz had ODE TO FAITH for sale…. Tomorrow another seedling on the Daylily Blog…

Forestlake Ragamuffin, Part 11, A Daylily Teeth Blog

jacklooye Forestlake Ragamuffin, Part 11, A Daylily Teeth Blog
FLR Seedling, Jack Looye

Lemon yellows are among my favorite colors. Unfortunately, I don’t see many seedlings out of FLR that are yellow. Jack Looye provided this image of a seeding he hybridized (sdlg x Forestlake Ragamuffin). While Jack didn’t provide the sdlg’s cross, I’d assume it was a line bred yellow because of the purity of color.  FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN does have yellow blend in it with YUMA. So yellow to gold hybridizing with Ragamuffin makes sense.

For hybridizing round yellow seedlings, and since I like big, I’d use daylilies with Tet Ruffled Perfection in them(you can find them in the Trimmer line and Benz line)and I’d also use  Solar Music.

For narrow open form daylilies, I’d use Jamie Gossard’s BEADED LIGHT, HEAVENLY YELLOW LION(Ragamuffin x Tetra Spindazzle in it), YELLOW TITAN(Tetra Spindazzle in it), John Benz’s REAP THE WHIRLWIND(Ragamuffin x Tetra Spindazzle in it), Barry Matthie’s BONIBRAE SAWTOOTH(Ragamuffin x Tetra Spindazzle in it) and Sandy Holmes’s GOLDEN GLITZ(Ragamuffin x Tetra Spindazzle in it). There are many more yellow daylilies that you probably can think of to use. Try a few crosses in yellow to gold next season. I’d bet you get a few keepers…. Tomorrow on the Daylily Blog..another seedling…

RUBY CORONA: a daylily to use for teeth hybridizing

WF RCor RUBY CORONA: a daylily to use for teeth hybridizing
WHITE FANG x RUBY CORONA John Benz

Nancy Olson asked  “Do you have any suggestions of a toothy cultivar that would enhance the height and branching and still keep the red prominent?”

Looking for a tall toothy red daylily is a hard find. They primarily exist in gardens as seedlings so they have not been made available to the public. But I do have suggestions. Even though RUBY CORONA does not have teeth, it is worth mentioning.  RUBY CORONA was by hybridized by John Benz.  John’s description of the daylily  says  “Fertile both ways and a magnificent parent, throwing clear deep reds with huge white braids and shark’s teeth” RUBY CORONA is registered at 36” and is a dormant. John crossed his RUBY COROEA with WHITE FANG.  WHITE FANG is a cross of (Angel’s Smile x Startle).

Nancy also asked, “ I also used RUFFLED STAWBERRY PARFAIT  with PAINTING THE ROSES RED and WISH FULFILLMENT that same year. Have you seen teeth from either of those cultivars?” WISH FULFILLMENT has been a very good parent/grandparent  for Stamile’s edged line. RED FANG is a direct cross of WISH FULFILLMENT.  VIOLET BECOMES YOU and TALLADEGA also go back to WISH FULFILLMENT. So while I probably wouldn’t use WISH FULFILLMENT, I’d certainly use RED FANG, VIOLET BECOMES YOU, and TALLADEGA crossed into teeth.  RED FANG is northern hardy zone 5.   As for using PAINTING THE ROSES RED, I don’t think I’d use it in teeth crosses because the scape height is 26 inches and more importantly it hasn’t produced teeth seedlings that I’ve seen…as of yet….. On tomorrows daylily blog we’ll look at a seedling….

Forestlake Ragamuffin, Part 10 David Hansen

7T48A 5T2A x Who Dey 7 10 09 Forestlake Ragamuffin, Part 10 David Hansen
David Hansen seedling

Welcome back. We attended the  Midwest Hybridizers image presentation meeting this Saturday.  Hundreds of new seedlings were shown by the novice hybridizers to the experienced hybridizers. Not surprisingly,  many of the hybridizers presented daylilies with teeth.  Furthermore, FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN was in many of the indirect and direct crosses of the teeth seedlings they displayed.  I think it still may be a good cross if teeth hybridizers re-employ FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN in their hybridizing over the next several years.

Backyard hybridizer, David Hansen of Nebraska sent me this extreme edge cross last week. 7T78A — [(Annette's Magic x Horny Devil) X Who Dey!].  ANNETE’S MAGIC (ED BROWN x FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN) was hybridized by John Rice. HORNY DEVIL ((Forestlake Ragamuffin × Antique Wizard) × Antique Wizard) was hybridized by Lee Pickles. ANTIQUE WIZARD  is out of Salter’s WISEST OF WIZARDS.  WHO DEY! (Munson seedling x FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN) was hybridized by Mike Holmes (myself).  The preceding crosses are a time tested hybridizing technique that Steve Moldovan advocated, cross dormants with evergreens/semievergreens.

An  observation; many examples of FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN  extreme teeth daylilies involve TETRA SPINDAZZLE in the cross. I had assumed that it was the combination of these daylilies that produced the extreme teeth.  I now wonder if it is really FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN  that is responsible for the extreme teeth. Thanks David for your example!

Tomorrow on the Daylily Blog we will look at a daylily that you might consider using with FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN….

FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN Part 9, Daylily Teeth Blog Angelo Brunetti

critical mass x bass gibson FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN Part 9, Daylily Teeth Blog Angelo Brunetti
Critical Mass x Bass Gibson Angelo Brunetti

Angelo Brunetti e-mailed me an image of a seedling that he hybridized. The cross is (CRITICAL MASS x BASS GIBSON). If you didn’t read the post on BASS GIBSON, you may want to do so.  CRITICAL MASS (Whatley) is (Mexican Art x Bear Claws). BEAR CLAWS has STARTLE in it. STARTLE goes back to Brother Charles’s  “MY SUNSHINE”.  MEXICAN ART is (Sligo x Mexican Sunrise) SLIGO is out of Tet Christmas Is and MEXICAN SUNRISE has YUMA and SLIGO in it. Don’t forget YUMA is in FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN. All of this combined should still make CRITICAL MASS an important teeth breeder in reds(two doses of Tet Christmas Is). One thing to consider when using CRITICAL MASS is scape height. Most of the direct crosses in the daylily are under  28”. The average scape height is close 26 inches. So if you want more scape height , look for a taller outcross.

A final thought on CRITICAL MASS is the daylily is loaded with dormants in the background and C.M. is a solid dormant itself. Zone 8 and higher may not get enough cold for this daylily to perform fully but I’d still use it to add dormancy to your line.

An observation about Angelo’s seedling is that the form went backwards. CRITICAL MASS is round red and BASS GIBSON is triangular. What happened? The open form genetics kicked in. I wonder if the sibs were open form also. Anyways, the UF teeth breeders are going to find his daylily very desirable. Another bonus is there are teeth on the sepals. I always like this added feature. If I had Angelo’s seedling, I’d  still cross it into John Benz’s “HORNS” for size and radical teeth and also take it into a round red with an edge like John Benz’s SPARTAN WARRIOR(Startle x Rose Destiny)

Thanks Angelo for sharing your seedling on the Daylily Teeth Blog…I’ll catch up with everyone Monday morn… we have a hybridizers meeting this weekend….
