What are daylily teeth? Larry Welch

Tooth Dev Des1 What are daylily teeth? Larry Welch

Tooth-Dev-Des

Larry Welch writes,
Concerning “teeth,” my opinion is that the projections from the edge of the petals and/or sepals that are basically triangular in shape with the base of the triangle being along the outer edge of the petal/sepal if there were no projection from that edge and the two sides of the triangle meeting at a “point.” That is rather cumbersome in words, so I’ll try to illustrate it.

The picture file “Tooth-Dev-Des” shows a single tooth on a petal of H. Devonshire Design (Salter, 2005). The triangular shape is easy to see. A question would be, how well distributed around the edge of a daylily for that flower to be noted as having teeth?

The second picture (P C-1) is a second-blooming-year seedling of mine. Near the throat there are many yellow-gold teeth (according to my definition). However, and here is another problem, from half-way up the petal to the tip of the petal, there are protrusions from the edge that are not teeth according to my definition. In fact, I observe two more different types of edge growth – - small knobs (?) liked those on the petal at 2 o’clock and “hooks” as on the petal at 10 o’clock.

P C 11 What are daylily teeth? Larry Welch

P-C-1, Larry Welch

So, if I should register this seedling, should I say it has teeth, knobs and hooks? And should you buy it, would you get all three when you grow it in Ohio as I do here in the heat of a Georgia summer? Or, should it be registered as having only the type of edge that occurs most often? In this particular case, I’m not so sure which one has the most occurrences!

Thanks Larry for sharing your thoughts and images!  Tommorow on the daylily teeth blog Roy Woodhall and Mort Morss.

Sawteeth or Sawtooth Daylilies, daylily Blog

STIPX UNK Sawteeth or Sawtooth Daylilies, daylily Blog
STIPPLED STARS X CRETACEOUS CRUNCH, Mike Johnson

Welcome back. It’s been a busy weekend. Sandy and I had the pleasure of presenting programs to the HUDSON-ADIRONDACK DAYLILY SOCIETY in Albany New York. We stayed with Melanie and Bob Mason at their 400 plus acre cattle ranch. We’ve been privileged to present to several other clubs this spring including the Pollen Dabbers and the Green Bay club. There is growing interest in Teeth Daylilies.

In presenting the daylily teeth program to Melanie’s club, Melanie offered her thoughts on what “daylily teeth” are. Later this week I’ll share her thoughts with you. Also over the weekend I heard from several of our daylily teeth friends, Mike Johnson, N.Y., Michael Miller, Va., Larry Welch, Ga., Claudia Conway, N.H., David Hansen, Ne., Eddy Meurs, Belgium, and Roy Woodhall, Oh.   who had some interesting historical thoughts.

I am going to start off this week with an image that Mike Johnson sent over. His cross is between to Luddy Lambertson daylilies,   STIPPLED STARS X CRETACEOUS CRUNCH. CRETACEOUS CRUNCH has CROCODILE SMILE in it, so the teeth can partly be attributed to Tet. Spindazzle. Mike describes the teeth as a “saw tooth” edge.  I’d agree that the edge of this daylily has a zigzag appearance.

A quick search of the database, A.S. Bell registered BUBBA’S SEMILOLE NATION in 1999. It is the first of seven registrations to date that use saw tooth or sawtooth in the registration description. I would have guessed more hybridizers would have used this term ”sawteeth” in their registration description. I wonder why more  hybridizers have not used it.

Tomorrow, Larry Welch on the daylily teeth blog.

Teeth Daylilies: What are they and what do they look like?

BASS GIBSONb Teeth Daylilies: What are they and what do they look like?
BASS GIBSON, John Rice
Venus FLYTRAPb Teeth Daylilies: What are they and what do they look like?
VENUS FLYTRAP, Jamie Gossard

In the AHS dictionary of Terms:  “Edges refer to the outer periphery of the petals and occasionally the sepals.”  Referenced to http://www.daylilies.org/ahs_dictionary/edges.html

“Edges can be structural, i.e. have knobs, braids, tentacles, fringe, and teeth”

Yesterday in my post I asked you to help define teeth. I spoke with several of my fishing buddies Larry Grace and Jamie Gossard today and both had input. Starting with Larry, I asked him, what are teeth and what he thought was an accurate illustration of daylily with teeth in commerce? Larry wasn’t quite sure on how to define teeth other than they were visible protrusions from the petal and sepal edged. Larry felt the shape of the protrusion was more important than size. Larry offered BASS GIBSON, hybridized by John Rice, as a daylily that has the complete look of a visually described “teeth daylily”. John Rice’s own words of BASS GIBSON are …. “exceptionally toothy edges”…

Jamie was more scientific in his definition. He said teeth were rapid cellular growth of the edges in a daylily.  Jamie said teeth daylilies were among other daylilies that had “ripped” edges.  Jamie also felt that the shape was the most important characteristic in defining teeth or other characteristics.  Jamie offered his own daylily VENUS FLY TRAP as an illustration of a daylily with teeth. In Jamie’s description he say this about VENUS FLYTRAP, “Venus Fly Trap is a breakthough in teeth hybridizing, white teeth on a maroon red flower. I believe this one to be the best introduced teeth variety to date”.

More on daylilies with teeth Monday.

Have a nice weekend.

Define Daylily Teeth, Knobs, Tenacles, Hair, Fangs?

rskid Define Daylily Teeth, Knobs, Tenacles, Hair, Fangs?

Are these Teeth or Fangs

A reader writes “Hi Mike, I have reading your website and am wondering what creates teeth on daylilies.  Are they broken ruffles?  I’ve seen some teeth on daylilies which do not have toothy parents so I am wondering about it. I also wanted to know if toothy cultivars are lower bud counts.  What are tentacles and knobs?”

Kathy J.

Wilmington DE

Hello Kathy, your questions have not as of yet been defined in the AHS terms dictionary. They are referenced under Edges. So I am  asking the daylily teeth readers to help define TEETH, KNOBS,HOOKS, FRINGE, TENTACLES, HAIR, and FANGS with images and  definitions. I spoke with Mary Collier Fisher, American Hemerocallis Society President and she has Ok’d me to begin the process to officially work on definitions. The completed definitions will be subject to review by the  AHS Scientific Committee.

Readers, we will work our way through TEETH, KNOBS,HOOKS, FRINGE, TENTACLES, HAIR, and FANGS. Let’s first start with teeth. Please send me over images of daylilies you believe to be teeth daylilies or combination with a few word on what is teeth?

Kathy I am going to ask one of the readers to also describe what is going on with Teeth. Are they broken ruffles?

As many of you know I have been working on the AHS portal. The work for me on it is nearing completion so I’ll be spending time on the Daylily Teeth blog this Spring. Hopefully with fresh teeth images as I see them or as readers send in.

Email your images with description to sandymike@woh.rr.com . This is you chance to participate and possibly get your images in print.

The edge  on the pictured seedling photo would be called  FANGS by some. What do you think?

Fortune’s Dearest Genetics, Daylily Teeth Blog

fortunes dearest grandbaby Fortunes Dearest Genetics, Daylily Teeth Blog

FORTUNE'S DEAREST GRANDBABY, Jamie Gossard

A reader posed the question about SHARK’S TOOTH in the Genetics of FORTUNES DEAREST.

If I am understanding it correctly, then 1/16 of a daylily would significantly add significant “pattern” breeding value in a cross where 1/2 the genetics are the product of an F2 (self) cross?

Depends on what it is crossed to and what you are after. A concept behind F2′s(sib) is to create opportunities for the recessive traits to appear and other traits to maginify themselves. A self cross as you desribe is different in that it has less genetic diversity. So actually a selfing a desired recessive trait shown would be a good idea. Especially if all the other sibs were different.

Studying the line breeding all the way up to MARILYN MORSS JOHNSON, it was Mort, continually selecting patterns that produced this extreme patterned daylily.

Can you take FORTUNE’S DEAREST or better yet ALAN LANE AGIN and back cross it to MARILYN MORSS JOHNSON and get protruding patterned teeth? Can you take the line bred daylily MARILYN MORSS JOHNSON and cross it into a self color and get a first generation pattern? The anwser to the first question, I haven’t seen any yet. But I sure am going to try.  The second question, definatley yes. I already seen them.

Repeating myself, here is the complete cross of FORTUNE’S DEAREST.

(Mort’s Magic x Sib to Mort’s Magic F2) x (Cool Jazz x Dream Express)

DREAM EXPRESS is ((Zinfandel × Ming Porcelain) × Fantasy Finish)

As I looked at the cross of FANTASY FINISH, I realized that I that this cross may take up to a week to unravel. There are six parents to breakdown.

FORTUNE’S DEAREST can be traced all the way up to Mort’s MARILYN MORSS JOHNSON. Photo at DaylilyWorld.

Looking at the cross in M.M.J. , Mort demonstrates the importance of line breeding the important traits of JULIE NEWMAR, a FORTUNE’S DEAREST  kid. We’ll discuss this down the road but a heads up on M.M.J., think patterned teeth produced by this daylily.

Did you know that FORTUNE’S DEAREST has doubling in the background? I didn’t until I looked further into the background. The first half of the second seedling in FOTUNE’S DEAREST is COOL JAZZ.  So we now have (Mort’s Magic x Sib to Mort’s Magic F2) x (Cool Jazz x .

Breaking down COOL JAZZ is as follows (Windsor Watermark x Tet Sari Tet Nagasaki) Registered as ROYAL FANFARE

KEITH KENNON, hybridized by Kennon. Evergreen. Cream-Pink Double no image found.

The revelation in the cross is the double in the background going back to DOUBLE CUTIE. Larry Grace has always wondered why a double popped up every so often in his crosses.

The above crosses also reveal where the grape watermark eye zone came from in FORTUNE’S DEAREST. Most Likely from Munson daylilies. On this side of the cross, only DOROTHY LAMBERT has dormancy in it. There is minor yellow/pink/cream color  in the cross from NAGASAKI with the majority of color weighted toward purple. More background on FORTUNE’S DEAREST on the next daylily teeth blog. RandyStephens FORTUNES DEAREST Part 2 Mort Morss on the Daylily Teeth Blog
Randy Stephens John Kinnebrew

Mort Morss recently revealed to me that the cross that FORTUNE’S DEAREST was derived from came from a cross that produced 5 seeds.  The startling revelation was that he had a vision of this daylily before it bloomed.  FORTUNES DEAREST bloomed as planned! Now what are the odds of that! David Kirchoff was kind enough to provide me with the cross so we could get an inside look into what made this daylily the King of parents in white teeth hybridizing. The first half of the cross is (Mort’s Magic x sib to Mort’s Magic F2).

So far you can see from these parents that FORTUNES DEAREST has dormancy in it and lots of it. Plus there are many purples in the cross with a pink- melon in the cross from Dance Ballerina Dance. Of the first part of the cross, it is interesting to note the cross of HOLIDAY FRILLS. CHICAGO KNOBBY appears to be influential in the color of FORTUNES DEAREST. Also you can also see a light edge on the petals.  The other half of FORTUNES DEAREST cross tomorrow on the daylily teeth blog.

Thanks to John Kinnebrew for his image of RANDY STEPHENS . The daylily has two doses of FORTUNES DEAREST in it. And FORESTLAKE RAGAMUFFIN as the other parent!
