Before anyone asks, I have no idea what a real oyster that whistles would look like :>).  We were on the east coast visiting Ron Valente and Bill Chambers one year and Steve saw a sign hanging above a saloon in Maine that identified the establishment as being “The Whistling Oyster”.  The name never left Steve's mind and when this daylily bloomed he announced that “this is the one, this is Whistling Oyster”.  No amount of trying to dissuade him was of any avail so H. Whistling Oyster it is.
Name aside, this daylily is one of Steve's culminations in breeding for patterned flowers.  It is a dark magenta-rose with a purple band that encircles the white triangular hashes, or as Steve called them thumbprints, in the eye pattern.  Both the petals and lighter sepals have a thin, pale silvery-lavender edge.  A large yellow-green throat enhances the bloom.  Fertile both ways.  Limited stock.  $100.00
