To say that Steve and the troupe that was in the garden the day that H. Piece Of Sky first bloomed totally lost it would be an understatement!  They must have been waiting for me to get home from work because the moment I closed the truck door I heard nothing but a chorus  of “ Roy, quick come back here cause you have to see this!” coming from the back of the garden which as many of you know is at least a thousand feet away.  How they heard the door close is beyond me to this very day.  I suspect that this is how people who win the lottery might behave.  Steve walked toward me with what I knew was a flower behind his back and a smile that went clear off of his face.  I knew immediately that something special had happened in the garden while I was gone.  When Steve showed me the bloom of H. Piece Of Sky I knew that he had achieved his dream.  The rest is history!
Before going any further in describing this wonderful creation however I feel that I must start with saying that both Steve and I feel that H. Piece Of Sky is primarily a hybridizer's plant.  Temperature tends to effect the blue coloration, which can very often fade to a lavender-blue as can be seen in the various photos of this daylily that are included in this website.  Although it has bloomed as seen in the many photos circulating around, this is not typical of the flower.  Its claims to fame will be that it has the genetic ability to do this upon occasion as well as what it is doing with its children.  Thus far, it is producing offspring that are throwing very exciting blue-eyed flowers in numerous shades that are consistent.
H. Piece Of Sky is typically a lavender-purple with a grayed, lavender-blue eye.  The sepals are a paler variation of the petals giving it the impression of being a bitone.  There is a band of deeper grape-purple surrounding the eye.  It can also take on tones of pink depending on the temperatures but the eye pattern remains the same for the most part.  When presenting itself in this manner the band tends to take on more of a pale maroon-red color.  And then there are those days when everything goes just right and H. Piece Of Sky does its thing!  The eye takes on the color that Steve called denim blue.  No more need be said about those special days.  Branching and bud count are best when the plant is not disturbed and do their thing on an established plant.  These characteristics can suffer if the plant is divided and moved often as we found out when we moved and lined out.  On the bright side it is fertile both ways and produces seed with a bluish black color.  Not in Collection
